the brooklyn bridge spans the east river from manhattan island to brooklyn. where it lands on the brooklyn side, a massive arch carries the traffic over a waterfront neighborhood of old industrial buildings, now turned into gentrified lofts. this urban passageway has a scale and mass that is heroic, yet approachable. the imperfect asphalt covering the cobblestone street is a worn carpet of sorts adding to the textural richness.

in Victoria, BC., a cypress arch leads into a public garden from the street. the mystery is centered inside where the tree trunk bends and twists to express the canopy overhead. the scent of cypress is encapsulated in this space, a reminder that mother nature is the penultimate architect.
