the WATERFARM
concept: imagining climate change
Our story opens at the edge of a river, where a vertical farm stands against a backdrop of flooded fields and encroaching waters. A solitary farmer, determined not to leave his home, ascends the building level by level, striving to stay ahead of the rising flood.
Imagining the mass migration of people from waterside communities is daunting. The Waterfarm images—digitally rendered and manually retouched—seek a quiet, muted atmosphere reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s work. the familiar and friendly vernacular of farm buildings is intentional to pull back from pure climate despair.
