toro

toro is a study in the brutalist microarchitecture of a chair. as a sculptural union, the work is monolithic in character. the back structure and its cantilevered arms connect to the seat block and two legs. toro was molded in quickcrete 5000 (concrete) with a semi-polished surface. pink foam inserts were used to limit the weight in the seat, arm, and back cavities. rebar was used at connections for the arm extensions, seat-to-back, and legs. full-size study models were constructed in foamcore and then painted (yellow/white and black) to study proportions. the speculative project continues cia’s exploration at the intersection of art, furniture, and architecture.
