tourists from the future

tourists from the future began as a provocation to consider how climate change will alter what we wear.

humans and all life on earth will be exposed to increased UV rays from the sun, coastal and waterway flooding, toxic smoke from wildfires, and limits to fresh water supplies. the ideas incorporate cia’s original sketches and her ongoing work with a.i. (both image and video generators).

a mosquito net cape is embroidered with flowers that carry capsules of Pyrethrum, a natural insect repellent. a protective sun shade is covered in soft solar cells and antenna receptors to power digital nomads and remote work-life.

the tourists confront rapidly changing weather and smoky air with garments that are quick-drying and layered. Modular elements support air filters on tall collars, add-on oxygen pouches, modular removable sleeves and pant lengths, and waterproof footwear. hats and hoods offer sun-filtering brims and eyewear protection shields against an increase in uv rays and reflected light.

a lightweight, breathable bamboo silk top provides passive sun protection. the garment is suitable for layering. the material is 100% biodegradable.

smart textiles are woven with electrical elements to manage temperature control and color shifts. embroidery and macrame embellish the designs. the material is to be u.v. reflective. the headwear includes a waterproof elongated brimmed hat formed in a recycled fiber and bioresin material. footwear is made from recycled plastics and natural rubber soles.

advanced insulation wear that is wind, fire, and water resistant. modular oxygen cannisters and backpacks with emergency filters integrate into the outwear. a full body suit provides a smart textile with passive cooling and thermal performance.

tuff

garment construction is intentionally box-cut to reduce textile waste. Tabs and large snap closures provide quick change-out of modular parts, making easy repairs and customization possible for traveling tourists. low-carbon material.
